APS Round 8 - Brighton Grammar School.
:: Melbourne Grammar School 1st XVIII Report - By Lurch.

The MGS 1st XVIII has had a varied season, but the two highlights thus far have been the defeats of two of the APS’s best teams. Three-time (2004-06) premiership school Haileybury fell victim to the proud Grammar boys earlier this season, and BGS has now suffered the same fate in an exciting one point win.

MGS’s constant pressure rattled BGS in the first quarter, with scores being approximately even at quarter time. Besides hard running, it was a big day for one-percenters, with strong shepherds and tough spoiling being served up to BGS. The second quarter saw the MGS boys playing their best football of the season. Harry Webb did not do his future chances any harm by almost pulling off a speccy in front of the coaches, whilst goals from Al Armstrong and Hugh Vickers-Willis shortly before half-time gave MGS a 10 point lead.

The game remained tightly fought until the end, with the last minute heroes including Jack Macciolli, Angus Lapin, and Alex Carter, who took game saving marks, allowing MGS to hold on to its one point lead at the final siren. It was as exciting as a win gets, and was a great response to the terrible loss against GGS. The only downside was a knee injury to leading goal kicker Ed Hughes in the first minutes of the game.

MGS is not a premiership contender in 2007, but at its best has proudly played above itself to fly the Dark Blue flag to glory.
